Digital Literacy Classes Kick Off in Northeast KCK
For many senior citizens, lack of internet access can be a barrier to civic engagement, access to vital services, and connection with family members and neighbors. In Northeast KCK, a new Groundwork NRG program at local community centers is helping break down these barriers by connecting seniors to digital education and devices.
This May, Digital Literacy Classes are being offered at the Beatrice L. Lee Community Center and Quindaro Community Center. Session topics include utilizing email, navigating the internet, creating documents and presentations, and ensuring internet privacy and security. The sessions are led by Digital Equity Coordinator Ash Spears with the support of other Groundwork NRG staff members and volunteers.
Participants are connected to Groundwork NRG’s Technology Library, which offers laptop and hot spot checkout to interested community members. They also have access to one-on-one tech support.
One of the goals of the classes is to build a cohort of Digital Navigators - NE residents who will have earned a certification through the program and are able to facilitate future Digital Literacy Classes and one-on-one tech support programs. Ultimately, the Digital Navigators will expand the impact of the program by providing peer-to-peer instruction across the Northeast KCK community.
Enrollment for Digital Literacy Classes is still ongoing at these times and locations:
Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2-5pm, Beatrice L. Lee Community Center
Wednesdays, 1-3pm, Quindaro Community Center
