Groundwork NRG Advocacy Campaign Helps Win Tax Sale Postponement

In a big win for WyCo homeowners, the UG held a special session last night to approve the postponement of planned October and January tax sales, which will stop hundreds of occupied WyCo properties from being sold and likely foreclosed.

Through a joint campaign by Groundwork NRG, WyCo Mutual Aid, and Community Housing of Wyandotte County, we provided immediate financial relief for tax delinquent homeowners in the Northeast and advocated for a moratorium that would prevent evictions and the continued accumulation of interest and fees.

There's still work to be done: the UG stopped short of a full moratorium, issuing a "continuance" (meaning that residents will continue to accrue interest and fees). Tax sales are set to resume in April 2022. Groundwork NRG is committed to continue supporting community members, while also seeking structural changes to WyCo policies and procedures that pose perpetual risks to housing security.
